10 Home Remedies For a Cough

thyme-teaGot a tickle in your throat or a barking cough that you just can’t seem to quit? Unless it’s a symptom of a condition more serious than a cold, there are many remedies you can try at home that are surprisingly effective. You could choose to reach for those overpriced cough syrups sold over the counter or try these natural remedies at home which will soothe your throat and help you recover from your common cold more quickly.

1. Thyme tea

Take a handful of thyme leaves from plants you might have in your garden (around two tea spoons) and put them into one cup of boiling water. Stir and cover the cup for around ten minutes. When the leaves have properly infused with the water, strain it and you’ll have a handy tea that tastes good and soothes your throat.

This trick is thanks to the flavonoids within thyme that can relax the muscles in the throat which reduces how often you’ll cough and can even reduce a lot of inflammation.

2. Honey

Something as simple as a spoonful of honey can work wonders on your throat. This isn’t just an old wives’ tale–scientific studies have shown that honey is an efficient way of calming a cough and can actually be more effective than drugs bought over the counter.

The reason honey works so well is not just because it’s thick and smooth, but because it’s rich in something called demulcent which coats the throat and soothes membranes that have become irritated. Not only is this ideal for soothing your own coughs, but it’s far easier to give to a child than a lot of bad-tasting medicines.
