11 Home Remedies for Acid Reflux

When you swallow, your esophageal sphincter, which is the muscle around your esophagus, relaxes, so that food can pass into your stomach. After food is let through, the muscle tightens. But when reflux occurs, the esophageal sphincter relaxes when it shouldn’t and stomach acids travels back up, which spells pain and burning.

Anyone can develop an occasional bout of heartburn. Eating certain foods, such as fried, spicy or fatty foods may lead to reflux. It also may occur more often in people who are overweight.

Symptoms of acid reflux include a burning pain in the chest. The condition can be so painful; some people mistake it for a heart attack. In many cases, the pain starts shortly after eating and is worse when lying down.

Occasional reflux is usually not anything to be too concerned with. But if it occurs often, you may suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease. For occasional bouts of acid reflux, over the counter acid reducers can be helpful, but there are also several other home remedies that can be effective.

1. Take probiotics

If you are not already taking probiotics, you may want to start. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that can be taken as a supplement to keep your digestive tract healthy. Probiotics have gotten a lot of attention for their health benefits. They work by keeping a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut. This good bacteria can prevent different illnesses and gastrointestinal symptoms. By maintaining the right balance of healthy bacteria, you may prevent the buildup of excess stomach acid.

2. Switch to an anti-reflux diet

In many cases, there may be certain foods that trigger a bout of acid reflux. Common reflux triggers include spicy foods, citrus fruits and fried foods. But keep in mind, everyone is different, and what bothers one person may not affect another. It may be helpful to keep a food diary to determine you reflux triggers. Once you figure out what the offending foods are, you can eliminate them from your diet. To decrease your chances of reflux, try to add foods, which include acid reducing choices, such as lean protein, oatmeal, applesauce and bananas. Make sure you eat slowly and thoroughly chew your food. Dietary changes may be all that it takes to reduce reflux.
