Heat rash, or prickly heat, is an itchy rash that is defined by the red spots that it causes on the skin. People with heat rash will feel constantly itchy and a stinging sensation on the skin will be quite persistent.
This kind of rash will occur usually when somebody sweats more than they would usually, which is itself caused by heat. Despite popular relief, heat rash does not occur because of direct content with the sun. It is possible to get heat rash in cloudy weather, so long as it is humid and warm.
The sweat produced by the body clogs the pores of the skin, and has a similar effect to acne, which involves the clogging of pores with dead skin cells and sebum. The results are also similar, with swelling of the skin, itching and red bumps that are surrounded by red skin. Typically, these will be mostly noticeable around the chest, thighs and face, though it can occur anywhere and favors places where friction is often experienced.
People who are overweight will usually be more likely to experience heat rash, along with people who wear too much clothing in the winter.
As well as taking steps to avoid getting heat rash in the first place, there are plenty of home remedies that have been used for generations to help ease the pain and discomfort caused by the rash. Take a look at these simple 11 remedies that could soothe your skin.
1. Oatmeal bath
This sounds like an odd solution, but it works really well. Oatmeal has been used for a long time to treat heat rash because it stops irritation and is surprisingly good at stopping inflammation, too. It soothes the skin by acting as a mild abrasive, helping get rid of dead skin cells and unblock the pores that have been clogged up with sweat.
To get relief, run a bathtub with cool water and add around one cup of ground oatmeal powder. Stir the bath until it turns a milky white colour. Then simply soak yourself in the bath for between 20 and 30 minutes. When you get out, don’t dry yourself as you usually would, as you might rub oatmeal against the skin too roughly. Instead, pat yourself dry, and repeat this process twice a day until the heat rash has gone away.
2. Cold compress
A cold compress is the solution to lots of health problems, and it works incredibly well for heat rash. Holding a cold or freezing ice pack over your heat rash not only reduces inflammation immediately, but it also gets rid of prickly and itchy sensations.
For the best effect, take some ice cubes and wrap them up in a clean cloth. Apply the icy cloth to your skin for around ten minutes at a time, and repeat whenever you like to obtain relief. The soothing sensation will last only temporarily, but it’s great relief when it becomes too much to bear.
You could also soak a cloth in cold water and do the same thing, though the soothing feeling will be much less intense than if you use ice.
