Ear infections occur more in children than in adults and are triggered by the presence of viruses or bacteria in the middle ear. Some of the causes include buildup of earwax, upper respiratory tract infections or even food allergies. The condition can be painful because of inflammation and fluid buildup in the middle ear.

Ear infections can often present annoying symptoms like pain in the ear, sleep disruptions, headaches or a high fever in some cases. Some people may also experience a constant ringing in the ear or discharge from the infected ear. In case of a more severe condition, some individuals may also experience loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and grumpy behavior.

The infection may be chronic or acute in nature. While acute ear infections can be painful, they are usually short lived. On the other hand, chronic infections do not clear up easily and are likely to recur frequently. If left untreated, chronic ear infections can cause long term damage to the middle ear as well as the inner ear.

To prevent the condition from worsening, it is crucial to treat an ear infection in a timely manner.

Here is a look at some of the most common and effective natural remedies for an ear infection.

1. Garlic

Garlic has very potent anti-microbial qualities and powerful pain relieving potential confirming its status as a very effective remedy for treating ear infections. A few different ways that garlic may be used to address ear infections can include preparing some garlic oil. This is done by cooking a couple of garlic cloves in 2 tbsp. of either mustard or sesame oil until it becomes darkened. Strain the heated oil and when lukewarm, drop 2 to 3 drops of the oil into the affected ear.

Garlic can also be mixed with olive oil to make a potent oil for ear infections. Since garlic is powerful on its own and olive oil is soothing for the infection the too, working together to ease the pain of ear infection and reduce healing time. The oil can be put together by using one clove of minced garlic and adding it to 2 slightly heated tablespoons of high quality olive oil. Keep the mixture on very low heat to let the healing properties of garlic infuse into the oil. Strain garlic and let oil cool to skin temperature before placing 2 drops in the ear.

Another way to use garlic as a home remedy for ear infections is to boil 2 to 3 fresh cloves of garlic and mash them. Add salt to the mashed garlic and put mixture on a clean cotton cloth. Tie into knot and place against the ear with the infection.

This is recommended to be done at night time before bed so that it may be left in the ear for as long as possible. The plug will likely fall out at some time during the night but if it stays in for at least two hours that is good enough.
